How to appeal a University of Edinburgh parking charge

The appeal route, step by step

- Keep everything. Photos of the signage, your payment receipt or ticket, the times you arrived and left, and the notice itself.

- The independent appeal is free to you. You do not pay to appeal at this stage.
Grounds that actually get charges cancelled
- Signage. Terms must be clearly displayed and readable at the point you park — including at night. Unclear, obscured or contradictory signs are the most common successful ground.
- Grace periods. Codes of practice require a period to read the signs and decide, plus a period to leave after your paid time ends.
- Keeper liability (POFA). To pursue the registered keeper rather than the driver, the operator must follow the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 to the letter — including strict wording and timing on the notice. Errors here defeat the claim.
- You paid, or had a permit. Keystroke errors in a registration number are routinely cancelled where payment for the stay is evidenced.
- The charge is disproportionate or the operator lacks standing to enforce on that land.
